SHARAD RITUCHARYA - Life style, Diet Regimen for Autumn Season

                     Season means Ritu in ayurveda. Ayurveda believes that body is in tune with nature and changes in season leads to impact on body. Due to same reason emphasis is given on following ritucharya for prevention of diseases. Ritucharya can be best described as a set of regimens to be practiced by us to cope uo with varying effect of the changing seasons on the human body.

                  In sharad ritu nature is with lush green all around, decorated with colorful flowers and fruit trees with chirping birds. The skies are clear blue with white clouds floating lazily. The days are sunny, yet pleasantly cool and comfortable and nights are slightly chill, clear and cloudless. The weather is mild, pleasant and refreshing.

                   Sharad Ritu is a season where Pitta dosha gets aggravated. Sudden exposure to sun light after rainy season aggravates Pitta dosha, decreases vat dosha and digestive fire is modarate in the body. 

                    Ayurveda consider it as a breeding season for all diseases, like Acidity, skin disorders, hemorrhage, burning micturation, Gastric disorders etc. One should follow this charya to avoid diseases.

Diet:

  1. Eating food only when there is feeling of hunger.
  2. Day sleeping and excessive eating should be avoided.
  3. Ghee – It is highly beneficial to reduce pitta dosha and also helps improve agni(digestive fire). Also removes dryness of the skin caused in rainy season.
  4. Foods that are cold in potency, easily digestible,  bitter,sweet, astringent taste are recommended.
  5. Avoid use of spicy, sour, oily food substances that aggravate Pitta dosha
  6. Alcoholic beverages, meat of aquatic animals, asafoetida, chilies, mustard oil, millet, garlic, brinjals, groundnuts, black gram, pop corns, frozen foods, ice cream are to be reduced in frequency or completely avoided for better results. 
  7. Avoid too much intake of tea and coffee
  8. One should consume water purified by rays of sun in day time and rays of rising Agasti star at night time for drinking, bathing etc.
  9. Food items with pitta pacifying or cold in potency such as rice,green gram, candysugar, honey, amla, patola, wheat, barley, pumpkin, pumpkin seeds, amaranthus(chaulai), whitegourd, white gourd melon, spinach, carrot, peas,bottlegourd, bittergourd. sugarcane, ribbelluffa(torai), sweetlemon, meat of animals like chicken, turkey, rabbit, fresh water fish should be included in the diet.
  10. Fruits like plums,pears,pomegranate, apples, ripe banana, grapes,and avocado can be included. Dry fruits like figs, raisins can be ingested in autumn. 
  11. Cow’milk,butter,honey,jaggery,cumin,turmeric,cardamom,coriander,aniseeds etc. can be used in ample quantity. 
  12. Herbs like shatavari, amla, patola, chandan, ushira can be used for internal use to pacify heat. 
  13. Fresh buttermilk with cumin, coriander, candy sugar and aniseeds can be consumed during daytime to combat heat. 
  14. Intake of milk and milk products (except curd), sweets, black grapes, raisins are recommended.
  15. Eat in moderation as the digestive fire would be weak during this season.

Lifestyle:

  1. Wearing light colored, cotton and loose cloths encouraged.
  2. Enjoying moonlight particularly full moon (Pornima) is beneficial for health.
  3. Early morning dew is also not advisable.
  4. Avoid exposure to sun light and eastern winds.
  5. Abhyangam (Body massage) with oils made of Chandan, coconut oil, Ushira, etc is recommended.
  6. Stay relaxed, avoid anger and good sleep is advised.
  7. Wear pearl necklace which acts as a coolant on the body.
  8. Regorous physical exercise and work should be rejected
  9. Use of Sheetali sheetkari pranayama is beneficial.
  10. Chandan, Ushir,Kapurkachari, Musta, Sariva,Neem etc. herbs should be used in the form of ubtan for protecting skin from the damage caused by seasonal change.
  11. Panchakarma is highly recommended in order to detoxify body and alleviate pitta dosha.
  12. Specifically Virechan (purgation), raktmokshan (bloodletting) are the important panchakarm procedures which can be administered under medical supervision in sharad ritu.
